Beech Bentwood Coffee Table Made from Beech with Glass top.
     
HISTORY This table was manufactured in 1982 while I was at Hall Russell Training Centre, Aberdeen. We were learning how to build furniture for the ships made at the shipyard. At the time, the Dunbarton Castle was being constructed and we were invited to examine the cabins which used similar furniture to that we were being trained to make. The Dunbarton Castle was later deployed to the Falklands. The table's style would have been typical, the joints would be used on various items throughout the boats living quarters. The table's weight and features being minimalistic but the glass being 10mm thick gives the table its looks.

JOINT STRUCTURE The legs are formed from 5mm laminations soaked in water and bent into shape overnight. After drying they were glued and cramped in a press into the final shape. The top rails were dovetailed and mitred with a rebate to accept the top glass. There is also a 10mm toughened glass top. The legs have a 20mm rail and 12mm x 20mm slats for the lower shelf. The legs are screwed and capped to the top frame.
FINISHING The unit received 3 coats of clear satin varnish. ** See Finishes
